Couch to 5k Workout 1- Success!

I'm hoping to run in the Disneyland 5k in January. Since some of my family will be running as well I don't want to be the lazy unfit bum who walks the whole thing, so I started the Couch to 5k plan. Workout One consists of a 5 minute walking warm-up and then alternating 60 seconds of jogging with 90 seconds of walking for 20 minutes. I knew I had a little endurance so I cut the walking portion to 60 seconds. I'm such a lucky girl cause my hubby offered to do it with me. We did it! The whole 20 well 25 minutes including the warm-up without stopping. It was actually kinda fun counting down the intervals. We ran without iPods since I read you can get frustrated trying to hard to stay in time with the beat of the music.
My only problem, I always get a stitch in my side. What causes this?

  2. My friend did that plan for a 5K we had recently and it really helped her! I need to do it but I keep getting foot pains.

  4. Nicely done! Couch-to-5k sounds right up my alley. I just started jogging. Some people have problems getting over the '20-mile hump' and I have trouble getting past the '2-mile hump.' Go figure.

  5. Congrats on signing up for the 5k! That will be really cool running in Disneyland! Here is a link to some info on what causes side stitches...apparently it has to do with your breathing:

I also agree with the comment in the article regarding how much you have eaten in the 3 hours prior to your run. I have been a runner for a number of years...the good news is, the more you run, the more in tune you will be with your body. You will know what works or does not work for you and side stitches will become a thing of the past.
